Intro (0:00-0:45)

Today on the Stratezine podcast we are talking about what it is like to be a social media manager, and what skills they use in the industry.

Marcella Wilden/Having a Strategy (0:45-3:41)

Marcella is a social media specialist based in Tucson, AZ. She works for a few companies and pours a lot of effort and work into building her own Social Media Marketing business. One of the key insights she gave was about the importance of having a strategy when it comes to posting. She explains that it is almost worthless to post unless you are posting with a purpose. Engagement results are much better when you take the time to study trends and apply them to your end goal.

Nina Mantle/Being Adaptable (3:42-7:10) Nina is a social media manager based in Eastern Idaho. She manages the social media accounts of over 10 brands. Loves working in social media and has been in the industry for over 4 years.

Nina’s advice is to be adaptable because social media is always changing. Apps are always changing; trends are always changing, and you need to keep up with them. You never know what could change so to keep up you better be adaptable.

Olivia Hohl/ The Importance of Video (7:12-10:28)

It’s important to have multiple skills instead of just having one niche. For example, video is becoming more and more important in the world of social media. Social media involves several different skills, so it’s important to always be learning and continue your education and keep up with new trends.

Saydi Harris/ Having Good Work Ethic (10:40- 15:32)

Saydi is a BYU-Idaho alumni and the newest member of the social media team at Wildflower in Sedona, Arizona. Most of Saydi’s experience comes from her time at SodaVine where she ran their Instagram for three years. The biggest takeaway from her years of experience is the importance of pushing yourself. It’s important to have a good work ethic when it comes to social media. Not every company that employs you is going to be an expert on social media. They may be impressed when you do the bare minimum. It is up to you to push yourself. It is up to you to assess your work and make it better over time. There are so many skills within social media that you can learn on your own, that will help you create better content.

Olivia Hohl/ Importance of Engaging with Your Audience (15:35- 22:20)

With Olivia, we talked about how important it is to not just be focused on sales when it comes to social media because your followers will see right through you. They will know if you are just there to convert them to buying your product. So when it comes to social media, you need to show followers that you are not just a robot behind a screen, but a human being with a personality. On social media, it’s important to create a community with lots of engagement with users of social media and other brands who trust you and your company.
