In the vast landscape of content creation, establishing a solid foundation is paramount to success. Enter content pillars, the cornerstone of any stable content strategy. These pillars serve as guiding principles, shaping the narrative and direction of your brand’s communication with its audience. But what exactly are content pillars, and why do they matter? Delving into this essential aspect of content strategy, we’ll explore how to pick them wisely and the significant impact they have on brand consistency and audience engagement.

What is a Content Pillar?

Content pillars are the foundation of your content strategy.  Meaning, that they should guide content creation and communication with your audience. Content pillars come in the form of a theme or a topic, and some companies view it as topics that you want your brand to be known for (Oladipo, 2023).

Your content pillars are each in their own category, and then there are categories within each content pillar that helps in the researching and creating of all the content you push out into the world. The use of content pillars will help you develop a cohesive and consistent brand, as well as giving you more specific direction in content creation. Studies have shown that finding and developing valuable content is one of the biggest pain points of social media practitioners.

First Things First: Target Audience

Before we can talk any more about content pillars, we have to talk about target audiences. Creating content pillars before a target audience is, respectfully,  a waste of time.  The basis of content creation is to add value to your target audience.  Each time you go to create content  you should be asking yourself:

“Will this benefit my audience? How?”

If it’s hard to come up with an answer, consider rethinking your content.

Many of you already know your target audience.  For those who don’t, go check out this article about establishing your target audience.  Within the brand building process, target audiences are defined, and so are their pain points.  Pain points are “the problems, frustrations, or challenges that your potential customers face and that your product or service can solve (LinkedIn).”  The most successful brands have a deep understanding of what their target audience needs and how to give it to them. Content pillars can be the means to creating content that shows your target audience how or why your product or service will benefit them.

Why do Content Pillars Matter?

Many content gurus on social media will tell you that content pillars should be as basic as

  • Educational
  • Entertaining
  • Inspirational
  • Promotional

We’re not saying that using content pillars around education, inspiration, entertainment, etc., is bad; rather we’re saying that  those alone are too generic.  The vastness of every category with its associated inter topics would leave you overwhelmed and nowhere closer to having a specific and niched down content strategy.  The following example shows what to do instead.

Example:

Say your business sells water bottles (similar to Yeti).  Your target audience would primarily be outdoor enthusiasts and individuals who  like camping, fishing, boating and other outdoor adventures. Your products are designed to withstand rugged conditions and keep items cold or hot for extended periods of time, making them especially appealing to people who spend a majority of their time outdoors. Your audience is looking for durability, quality and reliability in their outdoor equipment.  This is a very basic rundown for your target audience analysis, but will work for the example in this article.  The next question is what are their pain points:

  1. Environmental Impact: Is this product eco-friendly and sustainable?  Does the company value minimizing environmental harm in their manufacturing process?
  2. Durability Concerns: Will this product hold up amidst harsh outdoor environments and rough handling?
  3. Limited Portability: Is this product easy to carry/transport on a trip (hiking, camping, boating, etc.)?
  4. Inadequate Insulation: How well does this product keep my drink warm/cold for an extended period of time?

How would we turn these four pain points into content pillars?  Check out this Content Pillar Worksheet below:

Reposition each pain point as a strength of your brand.  For example:

  • Pain Point: Limited Portability
  • Content Pillar: Adventure-Ready
  • Content Idea: Showcase the adventures of the “water bottle.”  Show where it has gone and where it can go in the hands of a person.

A major part of marketing is showing consumers how your service or product can make their life easier.  Most purchases are made to solve a problem or satisfy a need.  Once you determine who your target audience is, what they need, and how your product can provide the solution, you can develop content pillars that guide content creation and marketing efforts.

Additional Benefits of Content Pillars

Compass for Marketing Efforts

Content pillars  not only guide content creation but also serve as a compass for marketing efforts. By anchoring your marketing strategies around these pillars, you ensure a cohesive and compelling narrative across all channels. Whether it’s crafting compelling social media posts, designing captivating ad campaigns, or producing engaging blog content, content pillars provide a unified framework that enhances brand visibility and fosters authentic connections with your audience.

Consistency and Brand Identity

Content pillars act as the backbone of your brand’s identity, ensuring consistency across all touch points. By adhering to these predefined themes or topics, you establish a recognizable voice and aesthetic that resonates with your audience. Consistency breeds trust, and when your audience knows what to expect from your content, they are more likely to engage with it regularly. Moreover, a consistent brand identity helps differentiate your brand from competitors and fosters a sense of loyalty among your audience.

Efficiency in Content Creation

Content pillars provide a clear roadmap for brainstorming ideas and planning campaigns. Rather than starting from scratch each time, content creators can draw inspiration from the established pillars, ensuring that every piece of content aligns with the overarching strategy. Additionally, content pillars facilitate scalability, enabling brands to expand their content offerings, maximize time spent planning, all while remaining consistent in brand messaging and themes.

Conclusion

Content pillars aren’t merely random choices; they represent the heart of your brand and its connection with your target audience. By aligning these pillars with your audience’s needs and aspirations, you open the gate for meaningful engagement and brand loyalty. Remember that the strength of your pillars lies in their relevance and resonance with your audience. So, choose wisely, craft purposeful content, and watch your brand flourish.
